What's New

On this page you will always find the latest additions to the site.

I will also occasionaly add new resources to the topics that I already covered. These will appear in the list of additions too:

05 / 25 / 2015: Created the Recommendations for Field Effect Transistor Resources page.

05 / 21 / 2015: Added AN74 Component and Measurement Advances Ensure 16-Bit DAC Settling Time to the App Notes by Jim Williams page.

05 / 10 / 2015: Added my video review of the 3rd edition of Practical Electronics for Inventors.

05 / 09 / 2015: I finally took a look at the 3rd edition of Practical Electronics for Inventors. Not a perfect book, but you get a very nice introduction for beginners for a modest price.

05 / 03 / 2015: Did the third part of the video review: Part3, The Art of Electronics (chapters 10 - 15).

04 / 30 / 2015: Fixed the broken link on the Sensor Signal Conditioning page. While the pdf file that is downloaded is now a different one, you can get the information that was in the old one in some other Anlog Devices seminar notes to which I provided a link too.

04 / 28 / 2015: I was searching on the Analog Devices website because I wanted to replace some broken seminar note links. But I found something else that I had forgotten some time ago: The Ask the Applications Engineer articles from 1988-1996. Very nice short articles, but for most you must already have a good knowledge of electronics to understand them.

04 / 26 / 2015: Did the second part of the video review: Part2, The Art of Electronics (chapters 5 - 9).

04 / 19 / 2015: I made, for the first time, a video review: Part1, The Art of Electronics (chapters 1 - 4). It was kind of experimental as I had no previous experience with this. I hope the results will improve with time.

04 / 12 / 2015: I took a closer look at the last 4 videos ( the Op Amp block ) of Razavis video lectures Electronic Circuits 1, and wrote down the individual topics and at what times they are covered in the video. If you are just interested in some special topics this might be convenient for you. You can watch the Op Amp videos even if you have not seen the other video lectures before, they are mostly independent.

04 / 10 / 2015: Added Engineering Mathematics 1 by Craw, Dagger and Pulham, University of Aberdeen, to the recommendations for Mathematics for Physics and Engineering.

04 / 06 / 2015: After 25 years, the 3rd edition of The Art of Electronics has finally arrived. I have been hiding in my burrow for the last days with my copy of the book to write a review, and it is the biggest one I have written so far. I hope it will be useful to you.

03 / 31 / 2015: Added the Electronic Circuits 1 video lectures by Professor Behzad Razavi, UCLA to the Recommendations for Analysis and Design of Electronic Circuits. They are relatively new (2014), so they are not as widely known as other lectures. But they are absolutely wonderful. Razavi is a great teacher who explains this difficult topic extremely well.

03 / 29 / 2015: While everybody is waiting for the arrival of the 3rd edition of The Art of Electronics (the date currently displayed by Amazon is April 9, 2015), you can entertain yourself by looking at chapter 9 Voltage Regulation and Power Conversion of the book. In case you wonder, downloading it is perfectly OK, I have linked to the post by Winfield Hill where he says so.

03 / 27 / 2015: Added Electronics Stackexchange to the Electronics Forums page, although, strictly speaking, it is an questions-and-answers site and not a forum.

03 / 25 / 2015: Added the free ON Semiconductor handbook TVS/Zener Theory and Design Considerations to the Diodes Resources page.

03 / 20 / 2015: Added the free Potentiometer Handbook by Carl David Todd to the Resistor Resources page.

03 / 15 / 2015: I finally found the time to do a review of the (freely downloadable) book ANALOG SEEKrets by Leslie Green. You must read this book if you already have a solid theoretical foundation in electronics, and you are now searching for some practical advice about how to make circuits work in the "real world" (especially in a professional environment). It is a great book with a few minor quirks (but remember you get if for free), densely packed with information. And it was written by a guy who has long years of experience designing precision analog electronics.

03 / 11 / 2015: Added the free Electronics and Circuits Lecture Notes by Dr. Peter McLean, University of Technology, Sydney to the basic linear circuit analysis page. The lecture notes have more then 900 pages and provide very good and detailed explanations and many exercises with answers.

02 / 15 / 2015: Linked the free Switch-Mode Power Supply Reference Manual by ON Semiconductor to the AN25 Switching Regulators for Poets page.

01 / 31 / 2015: I am still not quite finished with fixing all the broken links. But during this process I have also found some very interesting new resources that I plan to add to this site. One example of these are the Analog Electronics Lecture Notes by Dr. Peter McLean, University of Technology, Sydney. Chapter 4 of the lecture notes provide a very good and readable overview of all kinds of resistors and capacitors and their advantages and disadvantages.

12 / 31 / 2014: I finally found the time to play with some electronics again and also to read a few books. So I decided to add some review pages to this site too. But when I took a closer look at it, I found that an alarming number of links has been broken. Also some of the information that I provide is not quite accurate anymore, e. g. when online resources that I have reviewed have changed slightly. So before adding new content, I will first update the existing pages whenever I find the time during the next few weeks. A Happy New Year to all of you!

12 / 05 / 2012: Added the Op Amp Applications Handbook by Walt Jung to the Op Amp page. A great book with lots of expert advice on designing advanced op amp circuits. But you can also download it for free from Analog Devices as a set of pdf files: Op Amp Applications seminar notes.

11 / 29 / 2012: Added the popular ABCs of Probes by Tektronix to the Oscilloscopes page. It will tell you how you can select the right probe for your scope and how to use the probe correctly - the best scope is useless without a good probe.

11 / 19 / 2012: I finally added a short review to the Calculus by Benjamin Crowell page. However, I like his free physics books even better. I have not yet written reviews about them, so I just put the links to each of them on the same page. If you are looking for good introductions to physics, I highly recommend that you take a look them.

11 / 12 / 2012: Added the Analog Angle columns by Ron Mancini to the free E-books and Application Notes from Texas Instruments although, strictly speaking, they are from EDN, not from TI (but Mancini was working for TI when he wrote them).

11 / 08 / 2012: Added the video How to Measure Frequency with an Analog Scope to the page with Analog Oscilloscope Video Tutorials by w2aew.

11 / 07 / 2012: Nearly two years have passed since I launched this site, so it was about time to create a logo for it.

11 / 04 / 2012: Added ANALOG SEEKrets by Leslie Green to the Practical Analog Electronics Books page. A very underappreciated book that you can get for free. It is not for the beginner, but if you already know about electronics you will find some very valuable advice there. I will add the review later, for now just download it and see if you like it.

11 / 02 / 2012: Added the links to the main pages to the bottom of each page. I hope they will make it easier to navigate the site. Also fixed a general problem with the external links.

10 / 15 / 2012: Added three Soldering Tutorial videos by Dave Jones to the Breadboarding and Prototyping page.

04 / 11 / 2012: Added AN25 Switching Regulators for Poets to the page with Williams app notes.

03 / 31 / 2012: Added the 3rd edition of Op Amps for Everyone to the Op Amp Books page. Before you order it, you should download the free version of Op Amps for Everyone (which contains less chapters) to see if you like it.

03 / 28 / 2012: Added the Basic Electronics Tutorials to the Diodes page and the BJT (Bipolar Junction Transistor) page.

03 / 18 / 2012: Added the eCircuit Center by Rick Faehnrich to the Circuit Simulations with SPICE page.

03 / 12 / 2012: Added LTspice by Linear Technology to the Circuit Simulations with SPICE page.

03 / 12 / 2012: Started work on the Recommendations for Circuit Simulations with SPICE page.

03 / 04 / 2012: Added the Analog Oscilloscope Video Tutorials by w2aew to the Oscilloscope page.

03 / 02 / 2012: Added the Basic Electronics Tutorials to the Resistor and the Capacitor page.

02 / 27 / 2012: Added the EEVblog Forum to the electronics forums page. The best forum for advice on equipment for your electronics lab.

02 / 24 / 2012: Added Analog Circuits World Class Designs (edited by Bob Pease) to the Practical Analog Electronics page and to the page with his columns and app notes. Not really world class designs, but the chapters (by Bonnie Baker, Marc Thompson, Steve Winder and others) offer a lot of good advice - if you already know about analog electronics.

02 / 17 / 2012: Recently I found the Basic Electronics Tutorials by Wayne Storr. I have added them to the basic linear circuit analysis page and will, when I have taken a closer look at the individual tutorials, add them to some other of my pages too.

02 / 14 / 2012: Added the Single Variable Calculus Video Lectures by David Jerison, MIT, to the Introductions to Calculus page.

02 / 09 / 2012: Added the book Foundations of Analog and Digital Electronic Circuits by Agarwal and Lang and their videos in Circuits and Electronics (MIT Open Course Ware) to the analysis and design of electronic circuits page. I had already added it to the basic linear circuits analysis page before.

02 / 06 / 2012: Added the app note AN723 Operational Amplifier AC Specifications and Applications to the Operational Amplifiers page.

01 / 25 / 2012: Added the Oscilloscope Videos by Dave Jones (EEVBlog) to the Oscilloscope page.

01 / 24 / 2012: I have updated my review of The Art of Electronics after I learnt that the 3rd edition will be delayed by another year (or even more). On the positive side, according to Winfield Hill there will be 3 times more material about precision and low noise electronics in the 3rd edition, which sounds very exciting.

01 / 20 / 2012: Added Electronics Experiments by Calvert to the Practical Analog Electronics page.

01 / 14 / 2012: Added the free Designing Analog Chips by Hans Camenzind to the Analog IC Design page. Camenzind is the designer of the famous 555 timer IC (the history of this IC is explained in chapter 11).

01 / 14 / 2012: Started work on the Introductions to Analog IC Design page.

01 / 06 / 2012: Added AN263 Sine Wave Generation Techniques to the App Notes from Texas Instruments page.

01 / 05 / 2012: Added Wolfram Alpha to the Introductions to Calculus page.

01 / 03 / 2012: Added Williamson Labs by Glen Williamson to the Practical Analog Electronics Books page.

01 / 02 / 2012: On several pages of this site I have recommended the free e-book Lessons In Electric Circuits (allaboutcircuits) by Tony Kuphaldt as a good introduction for everybody who is new to electronics. There is, however, one chapter of this book that should be carefully studied even by those who have more experience, and this is the chapter on Electrical Safety. So I have added a direct link to this chapter to the pages that are most related to practical electronic work, that is to the pages on Practical Analog Electronics, Troubleshooting, Breadboarding and Prototyping and Oscilloscopes.

12 / 31 / 2011: Added Electronics Tutorial Videos by Afrotech to the Practical Analog Electronics Books page (though, strictly speaking, it is not a book)

12 / 25 / 2011: Added the book Calculus by Gilbert Strang, MIT, to the Introductions to Calculus page, also his free textbook and his Highlights of Calculus videos. The book is a very good and easy introduction to calculus.

12 / 23 / 2011: During the last days I have added several links between the pages on this site. In principle, whenever I add a new page I link it to other related pages. However, since I started to work on this site a year ago I have missed several possible links. I hope you will the find the new links useful. I will add a few more tomorrow and then I will continue to add new resources.

12 / 18 / 2011: Added AN132 Fidelity Testing for A-D Converters by Jim Williams and Guy Hoover to the page with Jim Williams app notes. This was Williams final app note, returning for the last time to the topic of building an ultra low distortion sine wave oscillator.

11 / 26 / 2011: Added AN70 A Monolithic Switching Regulator With 100 Microvolt Output Noise to the page with Jim Williams app notes. In fact, I had already added it to the Oscilloscopes page, because Appendix C contains an interesting discussion of advanced connection techniques for oscilloscope probes. I had simply forgotten to add it to Williams app notes page too.

11 / 24 / 2011: Added Boas and Nearing to the Mathematics for Physics and Engineering page.

11 / 24 / 2011: Started work on the Recommendations for Mathematics for Physics and Engineering page.

11 / 23 / 2011: Unfortunately, I had to shift my priorities during the last weeks. Apologies to everybody who came to this page during this time and found no new material. If this should ever happen again, I promise that I will at least leave a note and state when I will continue. During the next days I will start with the Math for Physics and Engineering page and also add new links to the Calculus page.

09 / 19 / 2011: Started work on the Recommendations for Introductions to Calculus page.

09 / 16 / 2011: Added the app note V/F Converter ICs Handle Frequency to Voltage Needs to the Columns and Applications Note by Bob Pease page. It is about his popular LM331 IC.

09 / 14 / 2011: Finished work on the Free E-books and Application Notes from Texas Instruments page. You should at least have a look at Op Amps for Everyone - this is a very good introduction not only to Op Amps, but also to some other topics of analog electronics.
